The ARC Strategy: How to Use Advance Reader Copies to Build Buzz and Reviews Before Launch
Advance reader copies are one of the most powerful pre-launch tools available — and most authors either skip them entirely or send them out too late. Here's the timeline, the outreach strategy, and the follow-up process that actually generates reviews.
Reviews are the social proof that sells books — and the authors who arrive at launch day with 20, 30, or 50 reviews already posted have a significant advantage over those who launch cold. Advance reader copies are how you build that advantage. But most authors either skip ARCs entirely or distribute them so late that reviewers don't have time to finish the book before launch.
The ARC Timeline
Send your ARCs 8–10 weeks before your launch date. This gives readers enough time to finish the book, write a thoughtful review, and post it before launch day. Sending ARCs 2–3 weeks out — which is what most authors do — is too late. Reviewers are busy, and a rushed review is often no review at all.
Who to Send ARCs To
Build a tiered ARC list. Tier one: your most engaged readers and launch team members — people who have already demonstrated that they finish books and leave reviews. Tier two: book bloggers, Bookstagrammers, and BookTok creators in your genre. Tier three: journalists, podcast hosts, and influencers who cover your topic.
The Follow-Up Process
Send a reminder email two weeks before launch with a direct link to your Amazon review page and simple instructions for leaving a review. Keep it warm and personal — not a form letter. Thank them for their time, remind them of the impact their review will have, and make it as easy as possible to follow through. Most reviews come from the follow-up, not the initial send.
