The 90-Day Book Launch Strategy That Actually Works
Most authors wait until their book is done to think about marketing. Here's why that's a mistake — and the exact 90-day framework we use with every client to build momentum before launch day.
The most common mistake we see from first-time authors is treating the launch as the starting line. They finish the manuscript, hand it off to the publisher or upload it to KDP, and then start thinking about marketing. By then, they've already lost 90 days of runway.
Why 90 Days?
Ninety days is enough time to build an audience, establish credibility, and create genuine anticipation — without burning out before the book is even available. It's also the minimum window for most meaningful PR and media placements, which require lead time that most authors don't account for.
The Framework
Days 90–61: Foundation. This phase is about infrastructure. Your author website is live. Your email list is set up and growing. Your social profiles are consistent and active. Your media kit is ready. You're not marketing the book yet — you're building the platform the marketing will run on.
Days 60–31: Momentum. This is when you start talking about the book publicly. Cover reveals, chapter previews, behind-the-scenes content, podcast pitches, and outreach to your launch team all happen here. The goal is to build a warm audience that's ready to buy when the book drops.
Days 30–1: Activation. Pre-orders open. Launch team is activated. Email sequences are running. Media appearances are scheduled. Every piece of content in this phase has one job: drive people to buy the book.
The One Thing That Makes It Work
The authors who execute this framework successfully have one thing in common: they start before they feel ready. The platform doesn't have to be perfect on day 90. The email list doesn't have to be large. The social following doesn't have to be impressive. It just has to exist — and it has to be growing. Start now.
